Our sales and rental facility is, and has been since 1977, located in Auburn, Indiana. We have been in continuous operation, with the Smaltz family (Michael & Mary Smaltz) at the helm that entire time. In 1977, our company founder, Captain N. Michael Smaltz USNR (1942-2002), retired from active duty with the United States Navy. He moved our family to my mother’s childhood home in the Heartland of America, Auburn, Indiana. My family’s goal was to provide the very best power equipment for sales and rental, and that remains our goal to this very day.
We are a new and used equipment dealer. We also rent equipment. We sell major name brand equipment. We have an advantage over all of our competitors that you get for FREE! Our advantage is that we sell the same brands that we rent. What this means is that we get to see, day in and day out, how a product performs in the most grueling of environments, the equipment rental industry. We see how a tool works when people use it and abuse it. We are able to see what works and what does not. The equipment and brands that do not perform to our high standards are removed from our inventory. The equipment and brands that do perform will continue to be used and will be added to our line of new equipment for sale. You get to see survival of the fittest on The Discovery Channel…..We get to see survival of the fittest in every day equipment rental and YOU benefit!
Taylor Rental reached a milestone in 2017, celebrating 40 years of business. Over the years, the company has evolved from a mom and pop equipment rental source for homeowners and contractors to a full service rental store for parties, DIY projects, construction, and even portable restrooms. Founder, Mary Smaltz stated: "The mission since day one has been to simply help people complete their projects."
Company President, Ben Smaltz is a second generation owner who commented: "We have achieved this milestone through the hard work and dedication of our staff and the foundation laid by my father, Mike Smaltz, 47 years ago. With thousands of rental items in stock, and a strong management team, I am confident the future is bright." To reflect and continue the company’s longtime progress, Natalie Taylor-Dewitt was named partner and General Manager in 2014. Mrs. Dewitt commented "Taylor Rental has touched so many families in Northeastern Indiana by participating in the most memorable events in life. Whether it be planning a wedding, baby shower, birthday or graduation party; Taylor Rental is there for the community. I am also proud of our community involvement which has been a personal commitment of mine."
Auburn Taylor Rental marked a historic milestone on August 22, 2024, with the grand opening of its new location at 102 Peckhart Ct., Auburn, Indiana, after serving the community for over four decades at 2224 State Road 8. The move represents a major investment in the future of the business, embracing modern facilities and sustainable practices while honoring a rich local legacy.
The event, hosted by the DeKalb County Chamber Partnership, drew over 50 attendees, including current and former employees, community members, and city officials. Auburn Mayor, a former Taylor Rental employee, delivered remarks reflecting on his time with the company and its impact on the community.
Owners Ben and Mary Smaltz welcomed guests and shared heartfelt stories about Michael Smaltz, the company’s original founder and visionary, who passed away in 2004. Their reflections highlighted Michael’s commitment to quality, customer service, and innovation—values that continue to drive the business forward.
The new facility features a modernized building, updated systems and procedures, energy-efficient LED lighting, and solar power integration, underscoring Auburn Taylor Rental’s commitment to operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. An additional building on site further expands capabilities and enhances customer service.
“This move isn’t just about a new building—it’s about honoring the past while preparing for the future,” said Ben Smaltz. “My father had a vision for this company, and we’re proud to carry that forward with innovations that reflect today’s needs.”
The celebration served as a reunion for many past employees and a moment of reflection for a company deeply woven into the fabric of the Auburn community since 1977.
